Amy Lopez, PhD, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker and instructor at the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Depression Center. Dr. Lopez provides individual, family, couples, group therapy, and telehealth to adults and children experiencing depression, anxiety, mood difficulties, or life stressors. She specializes in treating personality disorders and is trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which uses mindfulness and active problem solving to help clients improve relationships and better understand their emotions. Dr. Lopez has also worked in child protection, residential mental health treatment, the juvenile justice system, as a social work researcher, and as social work faculty.
Dr. Lopez’s research interests are in the area of social presence and Internet based mental health treatment, specifically how the therapeutic alliance is impacted by the use of technology. Dr. Lopez also studies happiness and is the author of “Search for Awesome: Ten Experiments in the Quest for Happiness.” Using theories of positive psychology and well being, she offers workshops to the community to help people learn to build happier lives.
