National Network Of Depression Centers

At the same time he established the University of Colorado Depression Center, George Wiegers made a separate gift to establish the National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC). George’s vision was to bring the top minds in mood disorder care, prevention and research to work together to more aggressively advance the development of new ways to identify and treat depression and bipolar disorder and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.

The NNDC is modeled after the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and the successful academic and scientific partnerships that began in the 1970s and led to a more rapid development of new treatments and helped to de-stigmatize cancer. The NNDC is comprised of 21 of the nations top academic medical centers who work collaboratively to achieve common goals. The NNDC is a key component to effecting a true transformation of care and someday a cure for people suffering from depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders.

The NNDC members have come together as “Centers of Excellence” to build and integrate clinical expertise, conduct research, develop new technology and advocate for funding at the national level. Four areas have been identified as domains of focus for the network – clinical care, research, education & teaching, and public policy.

The near-term goals of the NNDC include:

  • Establishing Comprehensive Depression Centers
  • Education and Outreach
  • Collaborative, Multi-site, Translational Research
  • Informatics Infrastructure
  • Clinical and Care Management Guidelines
  • Integration of Depression and Bipolar Illness Care in Primary Care
